DTF vs Sublimation: Which Method Should You Use?

Quick Answer

Sublimation turns dye into gas that bonds with polyester, so it only works on polyester or polyester-coated items and works best on white or light colors. DTF presses a printed film onto almost any fabric and any color. Choose sublimation for all-over prints and performance polyester. Choose DTF for cotton, blends and dark garments.

Why fabric and color matter

Sublimation dye does not bond with cotton, so cotton shirts are not a fit. It also cannot print light dye on a dark garment, which limits it to white and light colors. DTF has neither limit.

Best uses for each

Teams and events often use sublimation for jerseys and performance wear with full-coverage designs. For everyday tees, hoodies and hats, DTF is usually the better match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can sublimation print on cotton shirts?

No. Sublimation works on polyester or polyester-coated items only.

Can sublimation print on dark shirts?

Which lasts longer, DTF or sublimation?

Both are durable. Sublimation will not peel or crack since the dye is in the fabric, while DTF lasts well with proper pressing and care.

Which is better for team jerseys?

Sublimation is a strong choice for polyester jerseys with all-over designs. DTF works for names, numbers and cotton team shirts.
