How Much Do you Know Your Embroidery Supplies?

When choosing thread for a commercial embroidery machine, it's important to consider the type of thread, material, and brand quality. Here’s a breakdown to help guide you:

Types of Embroidery Thread

  1. Polyester Thread

    • Most common in commercial embroidery

    • Highly durable, colorfast, and resistant to bleach and UV light

    • Ideal for items that will be washed frequently or exposed to the elements

  2. Rayon Thread

    • Softer and offers a high-sheen finish

    • Great for detailed, decorative embroidery

    • Less durable than polyester, not ideal for heavy laundering

  3. Cotton Thread

    • Natural look and feel

    • Less common in high-speed commercial applications

    • Not as strong as polyester or rayon

  4. Metallic Thread

    • Used for decorative highlights

    • Trickier to work with; slower speeds may be needed

    • Higher breakage risk—requires special needles

Thread Weight (Thickness)

  • 40 wt – Standard for most embroidery

  • 60 wt – Thinner, better for fine details and small text

  • 30 wt – Thicker, bolder look

  • Most machines are calibrated for 40 wt unless adjusted

Recommended Commercial Brands

  • Madeira – High-quality, widely used in the industry

  • Isacord (by Amann) – Excellent durability, very popular

  • Robison-Anton – Strong reputation, good sheen and performance

  • Gunold – Professional-grade, wide color range

  • Sulky – Known for decorative and specialty threads

Tips

  • Always match bobbin thread type and weight for consistent results.

  • Store thread away from direct sunlight and dust.

  • Use thread nets to prevent tangling with large spools.

  • Make sure your machine tension is adjusted based on thread type.
